Why we introduce them

Most homes are designed first and assessed for energy performance afterwards, which is the wrong order: by the time a rating comes back, orientation, glazing and shading are already settled. Neighbourhood Architecture inverts that. NatHERS approved modelling runs from the start, so those decisions, along with insulation and thermal performance, are tested while they are still easy to change.

Behind it sits an uncommon pairing. Chris Clode is a registered architect; Brendan McGregor is an HIA GreenSmart Professional who led design at Light House Architecture and Science before the two founded the practice. One small team therefore covers both the architecture and the energy expertise, and can carry a project from concept and approvals through documentation, builder tendering and support on site. Sixteen Master Builders and HIA honours since 2022 say the industry agrees, most recently the 2025 Master Builders ACT award for Sustainable Residential Project. For an owner who wants a home that is beautiful, buildable and cheap to run through a Canberra winter, that is a rare combination.

Chosen and introduced by the BuilderHQ team.

The practice

Neighbourhood Architecture is a Canberra architecture practice established in 2021 by directors Chris Clode and Brendan McGregor, working from the Kingston Foreshore. Chris holds architect registration in the ACT and New South Wales, numbers 2618 and 11914, alongside a Masters in Architecture from the University of Canberra. Brendan is the practice’s lead designer and holds a Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. The team designs bespoke new homes, renovations and extensions throughout Canberra and southern New South Wales, combining passive solar principles with site-specific architecture and close attention to natural light, comfort and buildability, and to how a house contributes to the street it stands in. Recent work runs from the Tocumwal Revival heritage renovation at O’Connor to the Plant House and Flow House at Denman Prospect.
